I'm gonna need your help guys because I don't know what to do, should I keep using Bitcomet ( A illegal shareware program) or just delete it? I find it very useful though...but I need some opinions first.

That should be a decision you make on your own... in the event of a lawsuit (or not), nobody else would suffer (or not). Just depends on whether you think it's worth the risk.

Torrent programs are not illegal. It's the content that's being shared that is illegal.

Bitcomet is not a great torrent program. utorrent is way better

The semantics of the issue really aren't important. The most common reason people use torrent programs is to circumvent the law.

Couple of things you should probably take into consideration before you decide:
*How often you use it
*Whether or not you think it's wrong
*Whether or not you think the risk of being caught is high enough to take it seriously
*Whether or not you think the punishment for being caught is severe enough to not use it

well, duh. But torrent programs themselves aren't illegal. It's the fact that people are sharing music and movies without the copyright holder's consent is what's illegal. That's why I don't download movies or albums over torrents.

*I think its wrong...and right.
*The risk of being caught is extremely low for me
*the punishment...I don't wanna think about it.

It's wrong, but it's just so easy it seems like it can't be wrong, right?

I believe in supporting the artist. I like to have the boxes and liner notes too, anyway.

I say quit. I only download things if they're unavailable otherwise, like catchy theme songs from TV shows.

I always hear that arguement when it comes to file sharing, and I must say it is very flawed. For one thing, most artists are very happy to have their stuff gaining in popularity and publicity; this extra spotlight gives them a wider fanbase. This sharing of their work leads to more ticket sales at concerts, paraphenalia sales and perhaps some dedicated people will go out and buy the album. The real profit for the artist is in the concerts and merchandise. Second, people don't realize that the artist gets a miniscule profit from a CD sale. The numbers vary from label to label and I'll have to find the newpaper article and/or google it but basically when you buy a CD the artist gets less than 10 cents of every dollar. The ones who make a big deal out of file sharing are the record companies, who are really losing money on those programs.

I'd just like to point out one thing. Mokkan, don't have strangers make your personal decisions for you. If you're too unresponsible to make them yourself, then chances are, you're not up to choosing the more difficult choice anyway.

Also, this site is definately not the best place to ask, as half of us here are pirates, and the other half are RIAA spies. As for bittorrent, I only use it for downloading either albums that I had, but no longer have (whole hurricane thing), or singles until the artist's new album comes out. Oh, and movie soundtracks, as nobody cares about those. ;)

I'm not answering your question, though.

Torrents have many legal uses: I download several podcasts over torrents regularly, plus a Linux distro every once in a while. It's just an easy way to potentially save thousands of dollars/pounds/euros worth of bandwidth.

Azureus and µTorrent are both better than Bitcommet anyway.

The Decemberists released a music video, 16 American Wives, over bitorrent. The move probably saved them a bundle on server costs.

If you download though, they don't get any money at all. Plus, the reason you're downloading illegally is because you don't want to buy it from a store, and if you can get it in a store, they really don't need much more publicity.

The real profit for the artist is in the concerts and merchandise.
If you're not even willing to buy the music, why are you going to buy a lousy shirt or an expensive ticket? The bottom line anyway is that it's still stealing, and you're just making excuses.
