Just a heads up for anyone looking to register for these forums-- we won't be accepting new accounts until January as I try to reel this spambot problem in, weeding out all the fake accounts. Sorry.

I admin at a forum where this is a huge problem. Manually accepting registrations seems like a pretty effective (if boring) method, at least if you know what to look for in a bot account.

I think Mr. Fixit's (http://mrfixitonline.com) system might be adapted to our uses. In their registration, they have the question, "Are you human?" and it's supposed to dispel the bots. (BTW, I'm not a member of that site, but I do go there every so often for F-Zero tips.)
