I'm more than a little stunned by the news right now, but fantasy author Robert Jordan passed away earlier this afternoon. He'd been battling amyloidosis for a little over a year, but recent updates from him had been very encouraging. And now news breaks that he passed away at 2:45pm today. He was 58.
Jordan was truly a titan in the fantasy genre and a masterful writer. Every conversation in Eye of the World had my full attention and interest-- even ones about roof thatching. I never forgot that and devoured Jordan's entire Wheel of Time series in just over a month. The world he created was truly something for authors to aspire to.
We've lost one of the great ones. He'll be sorely missed.

I chose George RR Martin's fantasy series over Jordan's. I told myself I'd always have time to start Eye of the World some other day. But learning that he's gone now makes me feel guilty somehow. Like I should've at least read one of his books before he passed. Now it feels all the more urgent that I do so.

I believe he didn't finish his series- didn't he still have one more book to write?
My aunt gave me the first eleven books (thirteen in all  ) for Christmas, and I only read the first one. Now, I'll probably have to read it over before I can read the rest, and if I do become interested in what happens, it will bother me that I can't read the final book.
Anyway, I'm sorry he died. :(

That is very sad to hear. Though I have never read an entire novel by him, I am familiar with the Wheel of Time's popularity. I actually once read a little bit of The Eye of the World while bumming around at Barnes and Noble. I have every much wanted to finish reading it.

I'm shocked... maybe i'd better get my butt out to the library and read the Wheel of Time series. For all the good it will do. He will be remembered.

Robert Jordan, I've picked up a couple of his books, but haven't read any yet. I've been meaning to. Being a bit of a writer myself, it's always very sad when another well-loved author dies. It kind of makes you stop and think, I mean what would happen if something like that occurred to Brian Jacques? Terrible. Truly tragic.

Robert Jordan was a great author, we will all miss him. It saddens me that he lost his fight against amyloidosis, he was such an optimist.

And he wasn't even sixty. :( I didn't particularly like his work, but I appreciate how great a writer he was and will think back on him with respect.
what would happen if something like that occurred to Brian Jacques?
God forbid that ever happening.

In my opinion it wouldn't be as bad: the Redwall novels are "isolated" in the sense that each has its own distinct if similar plotline. There's no overarching tension to resolve as there was with Wheel of Time. Granted, Jordan was far enough along that it could have been worse, but I'm guessing I would have missed Jacques less.
