View Full Version : It's that time of year...

The weather is cooling, the leaves are falling, the geese are heading south, and Josiah and I are about to disagree with one another with the utmost vigour.
Yes, it must be October again.
Which of course means the start of the MLB playoffs. This thread be a tad premature as the final two teams haven't yet been decided, but there's no harm in discussing it prior.
This promises to be one heck of a postseason. The Red Sox are the winningest team in the AL, the Yankees have clawed there way into the wild card, the Angles are as formidable as ever, the Indians are back after a long hiatus, the Cubs are looking for their first title in almost a century, and the Diamondbacks are a young team with alot of promise. So the question is: who's going to win?
For the American League, the Major Contenders are going to be Boston and Anahiem. Boston doesn't have the best record for nothing, but Mike Sciosa knows how to use his Angels effectively. That could turn into a potentially upsetting series...
As for the NL, I'm thinking Cubs. They're a good team feeding off an intense fan base. And so long as the fans keep their hands inside the stands, Chicago should have a good run at it.

I think it's a little presumptious to exclude the Yankees from being 'major contenders.' I'll give you that the Sox have a good team this year, and that the Angels are always tough, but teams win rings by going into the playoffs hot, and no one has scored more runs or has a better record than New York since the All-Star break. We've got two aces, Wang and Petitte, a guy who's done it all in the clutch, Rocket, a rookie phenom, Hughes, and an open 5th spot where we can put sensational rookie Kennedy, Moose or Igawa.
We've got the best lineup in baseball, experienced veterans, the best closer in the history of the postseason, and a nearly unhittable set up man. Watch out for the Yankees.
Update: Mets lost 8-1. Phillies up 6-1 in the 9th. It looks like the Mets have engineered a historic collapse.

Wow... That's got to be up there as one of the worst collapses in baseball history. To be in first place for so long only to drop it at quite literally the last second...Yowch. A moment of silence for the Mets, if you please.
Edit: Looks like there isn't an NL wild card yet: Padres lost and the Rockies tied it up. How's this one going to turn out?

The poor Mets-even I can admit that.
I've heard that collapse described as the worst of all time. Agree? Disagree? Are there any objective grounds?
The Cubs, on the other hand, are fortunate just to be there. I'd love to see them succeed, but considering how much quality there is outside the Central, it's hard to predict them going forward.
Won't stop me rooting though. :D

This year I'm cheering for the Phil's and anybody that knocks the Yankees out. :D ;) :p
The queer phillies.
Hey now.....You don't see the Phillies drop an 8 game lead "like a bag of dirt" at the end of the season now do ya?

Well, can't say I saw this one coming: Rockies and Diamondbacks? I doubt any sports writer predicted that one.
Just pitching this out here for discussion: Does any one here really except the excuse of bugs in game 2 of the New York/Cleveland series? I couldn't believe how much people obsessed over that.
Also, (especially for Josiah) concerning Torre: does anyone think that the man deserves to lose his job over this, considering Cashman didn't get him the pitching he really needed?

I hate this. Every year that the Yankees don't win a ring, between the New York media and Steinbrenner, it's always 'Torre's job is on the line.' It needs to stop. The man has never failed to make the playoffs in his tenure, won four World Series, won his division from 96-06, and hasn't had much to work with in terms of a starting rotation since Mike Piazza was good.
People are so impatient; they don't realize how incredible it is to make the playoffs every year and win 4 rings in 5. Those accomplishments are amazing and will take a whole lot to recreate, so the fans and media need to be patient...

Well, so far with hopeful predictions I'm 3/4. But in reality....4/4 because I honestly didn't think the Philly's could beat a team with such an impressive winning streak.
No offense Badrang, but I think the Indians will take it, and the D-Backs pitching will bing them back to the World Series.
Winner? No clue, it's a classic Arms VS Bats match up.

HAHAHA Yankees out and they are going to have no organization next year...I love it! Sox over Rockies in World Series. And I really think that Cashman needs to go, not Torre (even though I think he's gone). Cashman is continuing the Yankee way of overpaying oldies.
