*Note* This contains some spoilers from the end of the book. So if you haven't finished the book yet, you may not want to read this.
This book should a major turning point in the character of Neville. Before this book, he was a poor kid who wasn't very good at magic and was a very quiet boy. But in this book, Neville statrts to become better at his spells. Wasn't he one of the best in Dumbledor's Army? And also, we see that he is very willing to fight alongside Harry in the end battle. And then we learn that the prophocy could have been about him as well. Now my mother believes that in the end, Neville will be the one to kill Voldemort or at least have a major part in his death. I disagree however since the prophecy says, "...And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives..." Voldemort marked Harry and this part of the prophecy implies that the boy who was marked will be the killer of Voldemort. However, if this is not so, then the next part of the prophecy could support my mother, "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies..." This part doesn't specify between Harry or Neville.
However, another point in my favor is that the series is about Harry Potter, not Neville Longbottom ;) . But what I was wondering is what you all thought?

*imagines a book titled "Neville Longbottom and the Sorcerer's Stone"...*
I don't think Neville's going to kill Voldemort, mostly because of the "mark him as his equal" line, but it does seem like he could go after the Lestranges, for what they did to his parents... *shrug*

I do think Neville is destined for greatness, but I think Harry being the one who has to face Voldemort was set in stone from day one. It was an interesting development and unless it goes somewhere it would seem to be rather pointless, but I agree with Lyrian-- Neville will be going after Bellatrix, not Voldemort. At this point we've got Harry/Voldemort, Neville/Bellatrix, and arguably Ron/Wormtail.... I guess Hermione needs to get herself a wizard or witch to swear vengeance against or she'll be left out. ;)

I'd like to see Neville AND Harry go after Bellatrix. She's absolutely horrid. I'd go after her myself if I could. ;)
Neville's character is definitely going to become more important, just like Ginny's. Ginny really got expanded on in this book. That's great for all us freaks who think Harry and Ginny are going to get married and have 3 children and live in the suburbs. :p

Actually I think Remus and Wormtail are gonna end up duking it out, and one or both of them will die.

*shivers at the thought of more main characters dying* Neville's role is getting a lot bigger, and I don't feel like repeating what everybody else said in this thread. Also, any of you ever wondered why Neville was put in Gryffindor? Well, I never did, but it makes you wonder how much potential Neville has, and we certainly saw some of it in Book V.

I don't think that will happen, truth be told. Remember, this is the story of the children, not the adults. Ron has the sense of betrayal over Wormtail posing as his rat for all those years. Plus, I remember reading a rather interesting legend on a Potter site a few years back-- I believe it was a Chinese legend, about a general who was very good at chess nicknamed "the Weasel" (Weasley?). This general died when he was bitten by a rat(!) that had been dyed yellow (and what did Ron try to do to Scabbers when he first met Harry?). I always found that story intriguing and it's solidified in my mind over the years that Ron will be the one to take care of Wormtail. I'm not sure if Lupin would even be capable of killing his old friend, no matter what he's done to Lily, James, and Sirius.

Well Martin I just re-read the third book. Lupin AND Black were going to kill him if it hadn't been for Harry.

And, I keep seeing this theory that Lupin could be in some kind of danger from Peter, since apparently silver is deadly to werewolves, and Peter has a silver hand... I personally don't remember that fact being mentioned in the books, though I seem to recall some passing remark about a werewolf essay in book one; maybe that was where they got it?
Though I do agree that Ron'll probably be the one who gets him.
Fine, go ahead, post while I'm typing... see if I care... *grumbles*

Planning to doesn't mean he could actually DO it. :p

Yeah, that's a good point... But I mean, they could definitely kill him in self defense, or defense of someone else, I think. If he was going to kill someone they were actually friends with, then I think they'd go for it.

Does Rita Skeeter count? I hope that Hermione eventually turns her in. But it's kinda cool her being able to blackmail Rita and all.
Harry and Ginny are going to be married and have 3 children and live in the suburbs.
I sure hope not! They just don't seem right together. I always hoped it would be Harry and Hemione. But, *sigh* It'll probably be Harry and Ginny then Ron and Hemione.
*Shivers at the thought of more main characters dying.*
I hope more main characters die. They can't all come through. And when you think of how many characters died in the Redwall books. . .;)
I think that Neville has just as much power as Harry does. Him living with his Grandmother and always being put down might have done something to his confidence.:(
