Arrow Brian Jacques Honored (Take Two)

While exploring the Liverpool Echo over the weekend, ran across these reactions to Brian's winning the writer's category and thought they were worth passing along.

IN the ECHO (Jan 2) you published the 10 nominees for the 100 Greatest Merseysiders in the artist, writers and designers category.

Just how your panel managed to come up with some of the nominations is a mystery. In all our 800 years, the best author born on Merseyside that you could come up with was Brian Jacques.

I will only put forward one name: Olaf Stapledon, born in Wallasey and lecturer at Liverpool University, which now holds his archives, was, some say the most important British science fiction writer, influencing men like Arthur C. Clarke, Brian Aldiss, C. S. Lewis, Stalislaw Lem and many others.

He wrote on philosophy and ethics as well as science fiction and poetry; travelled and lectured widely, speaking at the Congress of Intellectuals for Peace in Wroclaw, Poland in 1948 as well as attending the Conference for World Peace held in New York in 1949 - the only Briton granted a visa to do so.

I was hoping to be given a chance to nominate people like Stapledon. In fact I may vote for Leo Tolstoy who I believe, while researching War And Peace in the early 1860s, sailed past Liverpool on his way to somewhere else.

The attack drew a response four days later from Brian's pre-Redwall publisher.

HOW disappointing that CCC (ECHO Letters, Jan 8), in promoting science fiction writer Olaf Stapledon, feels it necessary to take a side-swipe at Brian Jacques, a son of Scottie Road who has now become a renowned author.

I was the publisher of Brian’s early works of Liverpool humour which included waterfront songs ranking with Ewan McColl’s and his extraordinarily entertaining re-take on the Bible, and I know him to be a deeply literate man.

I read Last and First Men, Stapledon’s chilling vision of humanity, and found it disturbing but turgid reading. Given the choice of what children might read to influence their development as human beings I find Jacques’ Redwall books the better influence.

Yes, they’re about an abbey of mice. But they are also about courage, ethical values, peace and collaboration, distinguished by a beautifully direct language and vivid storytelling rooted in Brian’s Liverpool-Irish heritage.

The popularity of his Redwall books has seen Brian travelling the world on lecture tours - every time he gets up on the podium he shows the humour, innate kindliness and sense of community which make Liverpool a special place to belong to. It’s high time we treasured him.

You can go back even further and find Brian's name popping up in letters all the time, usually in connection with his radio show (and its end last year). I find these bits even more interesting than the actual articles about him.

Anyone interested in seeing who Brian beat out in the "Writers, Artists and Designers" category can take a gander over at the original category page.

Technically we all are, it just takes a phone call. But considering it's an international phone call for most here, AND it costs 50 cents to vote, you're looking at a mighty expensive call

Well since no one else is commenting on Brian's portrait (which I thought was supposed to be a really big deal) I suppose I will.

I think it's amazing, in a word. The painting is an exact replica of the photograph, and I am extremely impressed by the artist's work. In particular, the intricacy of Brian's goatee that was achieved I find fascinating.
